Zusammenfassung

Mit der Rückgabe Hongkongs an China durchläuft die Stadt eine Phase politischer Unsicherheit und verschobener wirtschaftsräumlicher Koordinaten. Einerseits profitiert der Standort Hongkong erheblich von den neuen Verbindungen mit der Volksrepublik China, andererseits befindet er sich in einem neuen Wettbewerb mit Standorten wie Singapur und Shanghai. Die koloniale Regierung hat erkannt, daß in diesem Wettbewerb der Sicherung des internationalen Vertrauens und einer leistungsfähigen Infrastruktur hohe Bedeutung zukommen. Am Beispiel des neuen Flughafens und verschiedener Landgewinnungsprojekte wird dieser Zusammenhang aufgezeigt.

Changing Global Cities: Hong Kong's new Challenges.

  Summary

With the handover to China due in July this year, Hong Kong experiences a period of political uncertainty and at the same time the emergence of a new economic geography. On the one hand Hong Kong's economy benefits greatly from its new links to China, on the other hand it has to redefine its locational advantages in an increasing competition with cities such as Singapore and Shanghai. In this situation, the colonial government took great efforts to enhance Hong Kong's position by emphasizing on building international confidence and a very competitive physical infrastructure. This article discusses this policy with special regard to the new airport and various land reclamation projects.
