Some things you can do to save energy on using your Hi-Fi equipment...

Do you own or use an active sub woofer?

If your AV amp is as good as mine (just kidding) it has at least one switched AC outlet. This is perfect for plugging in your active sub woofer. The sub woofer is switched on and off by the amp. So you can't forget to turn the sub woofer off. Active sub woofers can consume a lot of power if they're not in use and still powered on.

Ever heard of the amazing power switched master multi-outlet strip?

If you want to go a step further to save energy, you could use an automatic power down multi-outlet strip. In Switzerland you can recognize these gadgets quite easy. You can plug in six or more devices into the multi-outlet strip. One outlet is colored red. That's the master outlet. For an example, plug in your computer there. Use the other outlets on the strip to connect your printer, an external CD-ROM, multimedia loudspeakers or your modem, etc. Later when you power down your computer, all other devices are also powered down automatically. You can also use a multi-outlet strip four your Hi-Fi equipment. They even come with two unswitched outlets, in case you'd like to keep some equipment turned on all the time.

Ever considered to save some resources in recording music?

Ever heard about Mini Disc? No? Well, it's never too late. You certainly heard about Compact Cassettes and CDs. Well, a Mini Disc can hold as much music that can fit on a CD. And you're in control what goes on a Mini Disc. You can add, delete, sort and divide your recorded tracks. But what has this to do with saving the environment? Just imagine how often a Cassette wears out and becomes unusable. You have to toss it away. Your recordings are lost forever. All your editing is gone, too.

But that won't happen to your Mini Disc. Recordings are made digitally. There is no head, well at least not a conventional one. A tiny laser pickup is used to write and read the stored information. And you can use your Mini Disc forever, well at least 1'000'000 times deleting and recording can be made on one Mini Disc. Isn't that a great idea to help reduce waste?

And Mini Discs are much smaller and lighter than an ordinary Compact Cassette. So next time your Walkman needs repairs, please consider the option to look at all the new Mini Disc equipment out there. You can find out more about Mini Disc at The Mini Disc Community Page.

Mini Disc is here to last forever, well as long there are any working Mini Disc players left (I had to send in my first not very high end and my second really high end indeed MD recorder for repairs)...
