Some Personal Facts about me

Guess who I am...

Background

I was born and grew up in Switzerland, in a nice town in the Swiss Alps. I went to school for 12 years and graduated as a businessman. Then I've got myself a job and worked for a Swiss Bank. In 1983 I went to Zurich. The bank was still the same, my job changed slightly. I've worked in the personal division and helped to introduce a personal administration system. No PCs back there, just big old host computers and a huge IBM 3270 terminal in front of me.

In 1986 I started an in house training course and became a mainframe computer programmer. After my education I've got a job in the information center and started working as a supporter for a 4th generation mainframe programming language, relational databases and graphical programs. The personal computer became very popular in these days. After a major reorganization I still worked in the information center but my job included supporting personal computers, mainly the standard Windows programs.

In 1994 our information center went through another major reorganization. I took my chances and started working as a networking administrator. My job included writing installing scripts for standard Windows software and integrating these programs together with my colleagues on our network servers.

In spring 1995 I went to Germany for six months and worked in our branch in Frankfurt. My job included ordering and setting up new personal computer for our employees and supporting them.

In autumn 1995 I went back to Zurich and had worked again in my old job. My colleagues and I made quite a good job by rolling out network server installation routines for Microsoft Office 4.3 in French, German, Italian and English. Things are a little different here in Switzerland, because we have to support applications in different languages.

In 1996 I had some work to do in the network support division. I helped installing OS/2 domain and print server and was involved in supporting this server platform.

1997 did bring some changes again. I began working for the hardware evaluation team at a newly founded information technology company. My colleagues and I did evaluate a new department server model, equipped with distributed data guarding RAID 5 technology and some workhorse personal computer. We did some evaluation on a good 17 inch monitor later. Now we're up to bring all the needed data four our technical staff on the companies Intranet.

In 1998 we did a transition in our workhorse server. A new model was chosen to suit all the business needs that are out there if you're going to use Windows NT. 1999 was very challenging again. A major evaluation was started. Monitors, printers, workstations and servers where tested to select the best.

At the end of 1999, the three year old information technology company did cease to exist. A new company was founded, but a lot of the former engineering people did not become part of this new company. Some of them quit their jobs, some went back where they were three years ago.My engineering colleagues and I was rehired by the Swiss Bank, where it all began in good old 1983.

In my spare time I like to watch good movies in Dolby Digital and DTS Neo:6 surround sound, listen to pop and rock music (Madonna, The Corrs, ZZ-Top and many more :-), spend some time surfing the Internet and enjoy my life. I also like Star Trek (TOS, NG and of course Star Trek Voyager), the Simpsons and Futurama. And of course, I like the big picture, too.
