Subject: Recall of 2001 Model-Year CL-Class and S-Class

Date: January 18, 2001

This is to advise you that on January 17, 2001, the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was notified that Mercedes-Benz
USA LLC will conduct a recall campaign of certain 2001 model-year
CL-Class and S-Class vehicles produced after November 1, 2000.

Due to a supplier quality problem the sheathing material on the electrical
connection of the heated windshield washer hose may overheat and cause
surrounding plastic and insulation to melt. After careful analysis, it has
been decided to recall and replace the heated windshield washer hose on all
affected vehicles.

Approximately 3400 vehicles in the U.S. are affected by the Recall
Campaign.
Of these approximately 1000 are in retailer possession. On Friday
afternoon
January 19, 2001 the affected vehicles will be flagged in VMI.

GIVEN THIS NOTICE, IT IS ILLEGAL TO RETAIL ANY INCLUDED VEHICLES UNTIL THE
RECALL REPAIR HAS BEEN COMPLETED. VIN RANGE:

2001 CL-CLASS VEHICLES FROM SERIAL END NUMBER 012920 TO 014503
2001 S-CLASS VEHICLES FROM SERIAL END NUMBER 176005 TO 191401

IF YOU ARE IN POSSESSION OF AN AFFECTED VEHICLE, PLEASE DISCONNECT THE
ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TO THE HEATED WASHER HOSE IMMEDIATELY. THE HEATING
ELEMENT ACTIVATES AND RECEIVES CURRENT IN LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES(40§F or
lower)WHEN THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING. VEHICLES CAN NOT BE SOLD WITH
DISCONNECTED
ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS.

On Thursday, January 18, each retailer will be shipped two repair parts by
FedEx. On Friday, January 19, MBUSA will provide work instructions and
applicable warranty codes via MBNet for you to repair client critical
vehicles. Additional parts quantities will be distributed automatically
based
on vehicle sales and parts availability.

The Recall Bulletin with illustrated work instructions is being finalized
and
will be distributed in the next two weeks.

A Client notification letter will be distributed in late January,2001.

Additional part orders will not be accepted at this time. Further details
will follow tomorrow.

LAMP ON AND FAULT CODE C1000-008 STORED: In isolated cases, the ABS
indicator lamp may light up and ESP/BAS/ABS fault messages appear in the
multi-function display. While driving or
just after the vehicle has been started, in such cases the fault code
C1000-008 is stored in the ESP control module. This fault is generated by
a brief, internal interruption in communications in the ESP control module.
Once the engine has been restarted, the fault message is no longer
displayed and the ESP system is reactivated. The fault remains stored in
the fault memory. No countermeasure is available at the present time.

Replacing the control module will not resolve the problem. Should this
fault occur, delete the fault code without performing any further repair
action be sure to note this on the repair order.

We will notify you as soon as a countermeasure is available.

02M/01-2 GROUP 80 - MODEL 163, EXCESSIVE KEYCHAIN WEIGHT: Clients with
large, heavy key chains attached to the remote key may experience
inadvertent switching off of the ignition.

In some cases, such as on rough roads, the weight of objects on the
keychain may overcome the key folding detent force, causing the key to
begin to fold closed. The partially closed key may then act as a lever,
which can in some cases have sufficient torque to partially turn the
ignition switch towards the off position.

In case of client complaints, please ensure that only lightweight objects
are attached to the remote key. A new remote key, with a higher folding
force, was introduced into production as of December 18, 2000, VIN #245145.
Only keys with the higher folding force are supplied by Spare Parts. These
keys may be ordered as replacements to help in circumstances where key
chain weight may be problematic, although clients should be advised that
sufficient folding forces may still be generated where key chain weight is
excessive.

This message contains further information regarding the M Class Retail Hold
communicated to you with MB-Net Message No. 074 on Tuesday, February 13,
2001.

All M Class vehicles in the chassis number range A250006 through A253538
must be inspected and, if necessary, have the AAM Module (N10) replaced.
In affected vehicles, the AAM Module may exhibit irregular operation.

Inspect the AAM module production date using Star Diagnosis, following the
path "Control Modules / Body / AAM / Control Unit Version". The AAM Module
date code is listed near the bottom of the screen in the following format:

Production Day:
Production Month:
Production Year:

An AAM Module having a production date code from 8 January 2001 through 29
January 2001 is faulty and MUST BE REPLACED. Vehicles with a faulty AAM
Module must not be retailed until the AAM Module (163 545 53 32) is
replaced.

If, upon inspection, the vehicle is equipped with an AAM Module outside of
the production date range specified above, it can be released immediately.

For each vehicle inspected, please submit a warranty claim to permit
tracking. Repair instructions, as well as warranty claims information
(damage code, operation code, and time allowance) will be communicated
shortly.

CLIENT VEHICLES
As first priority, MBUSA will contact each client with an affected vehicle
and open a Client Assistance (CA) Referral. This will initiate the
automatic shipment of a part for this specific client vehicle to your
center. The CA Referral will request that you contact the client for an
expeditious inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the affected
module.

DEALER INVENTORY
Vehicles in stock can be inspected immediately based upon the above
criteria. Details of parts shipments for affected vehicles will be
communicated once parts for all client vehicles are distributed.

faulty or both) is meaningless and can be ignored and erased unless there
is a customer complaint of delayed starter engagement. When there is no
customer complaint of delayed starter engagement, the fault
memory can be erased with no further action necessary. In cases of
customer complaints involving delayed starter engagement, the conductor
plate (part no. 140 270 05 61) should be replaced (it is not necessary to
replace the entire valve body) and the fault memory erased. Remember:
When servicing all 722.6 transmissions, the only correct ATF automatic
transmission fluid) is Mercedes-Benz part no. 001 989 21 03 10.

SUBJECT: Flexible Service System Changes: Synthetic Oil and A Service Operation Times

MBUSA maintenance requirements have been changed to reflect the recommendation that only MB approved synthetic motor oil should be used in those Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with the Flexible Service System.

Letters advising affected customers of this change are tentatively scheduled to be mailed in mid to late March, however all Dealers are advised that they can implement this transition to synthetic oil effective immediately.

To clarify: Dealers are requested to begin this transition to synthetic oil for their customers who seek scheduled maintenance for their FSS-equipped vehicle prior to receiving a notification letter from MBUSA. Dealers should further advise these customers that they will still receive a letter from MBUSA explaining this change even though their transition to synthetic oil would have already occurred with their current service visit. The drafts of customer letters that were included in the original January 12, 2001 correspondence to all Dealers can be used when counseling customers.

In those instances where the vehicle is covered by the Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Commitment, Dealers will be reimbursed a maximum of $5.50 per quart for synthetic oil.

In addition to this change in Mercedes-Benz Maintenance requirements, labor times for the FSS A Service will be adjusted due to elimination of the dust filter replacement and seatbelt inspection.

04M/01-2 GROUP 82 - MY 2000, MODEL 163, ENGINE WILL NOT CRANK / VEHICLE
BATTERY IS DEAD FOR NO APPARENT REASON: If you receive complaints of
battery discharge for no apparent reason with code 494 (USA) from VIN
numbers A145273 through A209471, the condition might arise from excessive
rest current when the MCS (Modular Control System) with level Q5 is shut
down. This can be caused when both the MCS and ignition are on and the MCS
is then turned off 3.5 seconds or less prior to switching off the ignition.

Please perform the following:
1. Ensure that the charging system and quiescent current consumption are
all within specifications by testing according to proper procedures
(AR54.10-P-1030AB).

2. Check software version of MCS unit using STAR diagnosis. Enter Control
Module Version menu for D2B Audio. Software Version 09/00 corresponds to
Q5 status.

3. If Software Version is 09/00, then replace only the MCS unit (163 920
04 86).

4. DO NOT replace the single CD units, NAVI units or non Q5 MCS units as
they are not affected by this condition. Any such claim will be rejected.

5. Install a new battery if battery (A004 541 03 01) has been fully
discharged for more than five days.

FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK ON SEMI-ELECTRIC SEATS: In case of complaints of
"backrest adjustment function does not work on semi-electric seats", check
the wire for the backrest adjustment by removing the seat back lining to
reveal the wiring for the backrest adjustment. The wire may be fastened
incorrectly to the seat back.

The wire for the backrest adjustment should be secured to the third wire
from the bottom of the seat back (counting up from the bottom of the seat
back). If not, the line may be subject to stress while the vehicle is
being driven and could fray against the backrest frame.

Examine and repair the wire if necessary. Fasten the line to the third
wire from the bottom of the seat back, and glue a felt strip (Part # 000
983 89 10) at the exit point of the cable on the backrest frame. Confirm
correct seat operation.

SUBJECT: DEALER TECHNICAL BULLETIN 25/01

25/01-1 RECALLS AND SERVICE CAMPAIGNS: WHEN REPAIRING ANY VEHICLE,
ALWAYS CHECK THE VEHICLE MASTER INQUIRY FOR OPEN CAMPAIGNS

25/01-2 GROUP 72.10 - MODEL 208, FRONT DOOR WINDOW REOPENS AFTER CLOSING
TO LEAVE A GAP OF APPROXIMATELY 5 CM: After completing the instructions
provided in MB-Net Administrative Message No. 549 dated November 20, 2000
(DTB 72/00), the door windows may in some cases once again start to reopen
when the one-touch close function is activated.
This affects vehicles manufactured as of June 2000 with the modified door
control module.

Possible Cause: Due to a timing problem in the left hand and right hand
door control modules (N69/1, N69/2), the hall sensors in the window opener
motors are not monitored for a brief moment. This means the internal
window position counter in the door control modules of the window opener
motor is 3-5 rotor turns behind the actual window position.

Remedy: In the event of this complaint, please follow these steps using
Star Diagnosis version 03.01 or newer. Note: During this test, windows
must not be denormalized or renormalized beforehand under any
circumstances, as this can cause the fault symptoms to disappear for some
time.

1) Close the window manually with the car door closed and with a battery
voltage of at least 12 volts.

2) Use Star Diagnosis to view the power windows counter value hall sensor
actual values.

3) If the counter reading is greater than 12, the door control module
should be replaced. If the counter reading is equal to or less than 12,
check the basic window setting for any possible faults (as detailed in
MB-Net Message No. 549 dated November 20, 2000) and
renormalize the window.

PDCs stock the optimized door control modules with a new part no.

Door Control Module, left: A208 820 33 26
Door Control Module, right: A208 820 32 26

The DTC fault code must be provided in the diagnostic code field of the
warranty claim. For warranty, please use Damage Code 72220 90 and
Operation Codes 72-5813 and/or 72-
5823 and 72-6405.

30/01-2 GROUP 82.30 - MODEL 203, MODEL YEAR 2001, SQUEAKING NOISE FROM
WIPER BLADE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE: If you encounter complaints of
"squeaking noise produced by the passenger-side windshield wiper blade",
please note the blade can produce faint squeaking noises when it rubs
against the top of the windshield. The cause of this is manufacturing
tolerances and insufficient graphite coating on the insert.

As of October 2000, improved wiper inserts manufactured by Valeo, having a
more resilient graphite coating and a profile cut 0.4 mm longer around the
wiper micro edge, have been used in production. The optimized wiper blade
part number is A 203 820 01 45.

For warranty, please use Damage Code 82023 36 and Operation Code 82-0000

complaint only claims for the
passenger-side wiper blade replacement will be accepted and the costs
reimbursed.

potential damage to the seat belt anchor bolt or seat bolt anchor nut, only
hand tools should be used to remove and install the seat belt anchor bolt.
The seat belt anchor bolt uses fine threads that will gall with the heat
created through the increased friction generated by air / electric and/or
battery powered tool usage. This in turn will also damage the seat belt
anchor nut, necessitating the replacement of the seat adjustment
mechanism or seat cushion pan. Additionally, the seat belt anchor bolt
should always be started by hand to insure proper alignment.

Activate road test using STAR DIAGNOSIS (ESP: Control Module Activations).
Complete diagnosis.
Switch off the ignition.
Start the engine.
Press switch N72/1s1 (ESP-OFF switch) down (ESP is activated).
Operate brake (brake pressure > 35 bar).
The A1e17 indicator lamp (ABS indicator lamp) lights up.
Drive vehicle forwards at a speed of approx. 10 km/h.
After a few meters turn the vehicle a quarter circle then briefly
counter-steer.
The vehicle must be counter-steered within 15 sec of the ESP-OFF switch
being pressed down. If a time of more than 15 sec elapses, the road test
must be repeated.

The road test is now completed, and the ABS indicator lamp goes out.

STAR Diagnosis will be corrected accordingly in version 04/01.

We would like to remind you again that the ESP control module must not be
replaced under any circumstances for these fault codes. The fault code
merely shows that the road test mode is activated and that the road test
must be carried out once this mode is activated. Cycling the key will not
release this mode.

40/01-2 GROUP 77.20 - MODELS 220 AND 215 SLIDING ROOF EXPRESS CLOSE
FEATURE: As of November 30, 2000 production, all S and CL-Class sliding
roofs have a new express close
feature from the open position. The roof panel will travel past the
closing point, pop up approximately 4 mm and then pop down to close. This
insures a more precise closing
position.

Since the November 30, 2000 production change, the rear edge of the sliding
roof glass panel is set between flush to 1 mm above the roof. The
adjustment procedure in WIS
document no. AR77.20-P-1100M will be revised.

Control module adaptation in DAS for this new feature is as follows:
1. Select Main Groups
2. Select Control Units
3. Select Body
4. Select OCP - Overhead control panel
5. Select Overhead control panel
6. Select Control unit adaptations
7. Select Coding of the close-via-tilt function
8. Press enter or F2
9. Select either ACTIVE by pressing F3 or PASSIVE by pressing F4
9. Exit DAS

This coding can be carried out for all control modules starting with model
year 2000. All model year 2000 cars up to November 29, 2000 production and
all spare parts (215 820 06 01) have been coded "passive" meaning this new
feature is not enabled. All cars since November 30, 2000 production have
been set to "active" meaning this new feature is enabled.

FUNCTION: If you encounter complaints of localized temperature differences
in the seat during operation, particularly in the vicinity of the backrest
side cushion adjacent to the door, please note the following.

The heating element (R13/2, R13/4) in the fleece lining is subject to wear
caused by the flexing and rubbing when passengers get in the vehicle. Over
time, this can cause thin, individual strands of the heating element to
break, leading to temperature differences.

For this complaint, a new heating element may be installed.

As of the end of February 2001, the supplier has improved durability of the
heating elements by rerouting them in the vicinity of the backrest side
cushion. The part number (A 208 820 06 98) remains the same.

For warranty, please use Damage Code 91019 73

Airbag

Mercedes-Benz USA will conduct Service Campaigns with respect to certain
model year 2000 SLK and E-Class vehicles produced in early model year 2000.
These campaigns have been initiated as a precautionary measure to replace
the front left and/or right side impact airbags in Model 170 vehicles and
the rear left and/or right side impact airbags on Model 210 vehicles.

In order to easily identify whether the left or right side airbag needs to
be replaced two Service Campaign numbers have been assigned. Service
Campaign Number 2001040001 is for the left side airbag and Service Campaign
number 2001040002 is for the right side airbag. Vehicles which require
both left and right side airbags to be replaced are listed under each
campaign number

Approximately 1,841 vehicles in the U.S. are affected by the Service
Campaigns. The Service Campaign Bulletin with illustrated work instructions
will be distributed on or about April 30.

Customer notification letters will be distributed on or about May 3, 2001.

Customer care measures for these Service campaigns will be outlined in the
forthcoming campaign bulletin. Beginning today initial part quantities
will be distributed automatically based on vehicle sales. Additional parts
may be ordered via fax with VIN number to RPS. Further details will
follow.

Under certain circumstances, simultaneous application of the brake and
accelerator pedal (e.g., two footed driving) will result in the engine ECU
returning the actuator to the
idle position.

Upon release of the brake pedal and/or application of the accelerator
pedal, there is a 1-2 second delay until the actuator moves to the new
accelerator pedal input position.
This delay is integrated in the ECU as a safety feature to provide smoother
acceleration during actuator transition from idle and to minimize any
sudden surges that might result from the release of the brake after
simultaneous brake and accelerator application that may startle a driver.
It is not subject to modification in the field.

A driver that simultaneously applies the brake and accelerator pedals may
experience this scenario, especially when driving in stop and go traffic.
In case of customer complaints, explain that this is a design
characteristic incorporated in the engine management system as a safety
feature.

102 P-B-72.10/22 8/6/2001 208 72 Front Door Window Reopens After Closing to Leave a Gap of Approx. 5 CM DTB
Date: August 6, 2001
Order No.: P-B-72.10/22
Supersedes: DTB 25/01 dated April 10, 2001
Group: 72
SUBJECT: Model 208
Front Door Window Reopens After Closing to Leave a Gap of Approx. 5 CM
In model 208 vehicles if the front door window reopens after closing, leaving a gap of approximately 5 cm,
do not replace door control modules. Please perform the following steps to resolve.
After completing the instructions provided in DTB 72/00 dated November 20, 2000, the door windows may
in some cases reverse when the one-touch close function is activated. This affects model 208 vehicles
manufactured as of June 2000. Modified software was phased into production starting in March 2001.
Possible Cause: Due to a timing issue in the left hand and right hand door control modules (N69/1, N69/2),
the hall sensors in the window opener motors are not monitored for a brief moment. This means the internal
window position counter of the window opener motor may be 3-5 rotor turns behind the actual window position.
Remedy: In the event of this occurrence, please follow these steps using Star Diagnosis version 06.01 or
newer. Note: During this test, windows must not be denormalized or renormalized beforehand under any
circumstances, as this can cause the fault symptoms to disappear for a brief time.
1) Close the driver's window manually with the driver's door closed and with a battery voltage of at least 12
volts.
2) Use Star Diagnosis to enter the door control module (control modules / seats and doors / DCM1) and
observe the power window counter reading from the "Actual Values" menu (item 07).
3) If the counter reading is 13 or higher, the door control module must be adjusted (step 4). If the counter
reading is equal to or less than 12, check the basic window setting for any possible faults (as detailed in
DTB 72/00) and renormalize the window (see below).
4) Use Star Diagnosis to adjust the door control module. Exit the Actual Values screen (step 2), select
menu item 6 'control module adaptations'. If the DCM has not yet been adjusted, menu item 4 will be
visible 'window (FH) initializing'. Select this item and read the hint screen, then press 'start' (F2).
5) After this adjustment has been made, the power window must be denormalized using Star Diagnosis
under 'Control module adaptations / synchronization', then press F2 after reading the instructions and
renormalize using the power window switches with the doors closed to correct the position sensor
readings.
6) Repeat the same steps for DCM2 - Door Control Module Front Passenger Side.

SUBJECT: Models 129, 170, 202, 208, 210, 215 and 220
with M112 or 113 Engines Alternator Mounting Bolts
Alternator mounting bolts for both M112 and M113 engines have two different lengths. Earlier engines have 95
mm long bolts and later engines have 105 mm long bolts. The reason is that both the later version water pump
and the engine front cover have been modified by inserting a steel bushing in the alternator mounting hole,
which made the upper and lower alternator mounting holes thicker by 10 mm.
NOTE: Both replacement water pump and engine front cover are only available in modified version
(with steel bushing in mounting hole).

For M112 engines with engine serial no. 033140 or lower and for M113 engines with engine serial no. 000200
or lower, the proper use of the short and long alternator mounting bolts is as follows:
1. Replacing Engine Front Cover Only: Use only short bolt in the upper alternator bracket and use only
long bolt in the bottom alternator bracket. Otherwise, the front engine cover alternator brackets will be
damaged and not covered by warranty.
2. Replacing Engine Water Pump Only: Use only long bolt in the upper and lower alternator brackets.
Otherwise the front engine cover alternator brackets will be damaged and not covered by warranty.
3. Replacing both Engine Front Cover and Water Pump Simultaneously: Use only long bolt in the

SUBJECT: Model CL203
Panorama Roof Panel Does Not Open or Move
If you encounter instances where the panorama roof panel's motor may not have enough power to open the roof
when new, it may be due to the effects of temperature and expansion of materials. Please follow the below
procedure to remedy.
Remedy:
1. Start engine or supply vehicle with 13.5 volts from an external source.
2. Open the sunshades.
3. Open the panorama roof to approximately 15 cm (6 inches) and close again. Repeat this 50 times to
achieve a "break-in" effect.
Note:
1. If the power of the motor is too weak to open the roof, manually push the roof open, using your hand, at the
rear as the switch is being activated.
2. If the motor becomes too hot, it will be turned off by the internal thermal switch. Let the motor cool for
30 seconds then continue with procedure.

114 P-B-88.50/24 8/16/2001 203 88 TRUNK LID DOES NOT OPEN DTB
Date: August 16, 2001
Order No.: P-B-88.50/24
Supersedes:
Group: 88
SUBJECT: MODEL 203
TRUNK LID DOES NOT OPEN
If you encounter instances where the trunk lid on model 203 vehicles cannot be opened using the remote
control key (A8/1), the interior trunk lid release button (S20/1s6) or the trunk lid outer handle (S88/8), please
note the following. The trunk lid can only be opened mechanically, by turning and holding the mechanical key
in the trunk lock 45 degrees to the left and then pulling the trunk handle.
This may be caused by a rotating part in the electric motor's gearing becoming jammed, preventing the trunk
lid from opening electrically. The trunk lid locking mechanism is opened by an electric motor with gears. It is
actuated by a microswitch in the handle which signals the locking mechanism's motor. A cable is used only
for mechanical emergency release of the trunk lid lock.
To resolve this complaint, install a new lower section of the lock with the cable indicated below. Do NOT
replace the opening handle (upper section of lock), as it is not affected by this condition.

SUBJECT: Model 203
Noises from Shaft for Front Seat Tilt Adjustment
If you encounter instances where load changes produce noises from the shaft for the front seat tilt
adjustment on model 203 vehicles, do not replace the seat adjustment mechanism. To resolve, coat the
tilt adjustment shaft and both left and right bearing brackets with lubricant, part no. 001 989 50 51.

Only the lubricant stated above is to be used to eliminate noises produced by plastic parts. Commercially
available greases may contain components which extract the softening agent out of plastics, causing the
bearing bracket to break.
Procedure:
1) Remove front seat (AR91.10-P-1000P).
2) Place front seat on a suitable supporting surface with the underside facing up.
3) Press out the plastic pins on the left and right bearing bracket and remove (brackets are clipped into
place). Bearing brackets and plastic pins are not reusable.
4) Apply lubricant to the contact surfaces of the bearing brackets and the tilt adjustment shaft.
5) Perform the above steps in reverse order to reinstall seat.

After completing the instructions provided in DTB 72/00 dated November 20, 2000, the door windows may
in some cases reverse when the one-touch close function is activated. This affects model 208 vehicles
manufactured as of June 2000 with door control module part numbers 208 720 21/22 26. Modified
software was phased into production starting in March 2001.
5) After this adjustment has been made, the power window must be denormalized using Star Diagnosis
under 'Control module adaptations / synchronization', then press F2 after reading the instructions and
renormalize using the power window switches with the doors closed to correct the position sensor
readings.

Replacement of Center Console Switch Group
On Model 163 vehicles from Model Year 1998 through 2001, after replacing the Center Console Switch Group
(S21) for front window switch failures ONLY, please perform the following work:
1. For left front window switch failure, remove fuse f30 from F1 (MY '98, '99) or F2 (MY '00, '01) (fuse and
relay box); or for right front window switch failure, remove fuse f29 from F1 (MY '98, '99) or F2 (MY '00, '01)
(fuse and relay box).
2. Connect a DMM (digital multi-meter) rated for a minimum 20 ampere current draw to quiescent current test
adapter, part no. 140 589 12 21 00, and then install adapter into relevant removed fuse position.
3. Monitor the amperage draw while operating the appropriate window switch to fully lower and then raise the
window. Disregard the blocked current which occurs momentarily once the window reaches the fully raised
or lowered position.
If the window operation current exceeds 12 amperes, determine the cause, e.g., distorted window frame, rough
window regulator operation, etc., and correct as necessary.
The observed maximum operating currents (raising and lowering) MUST be included in the dealer text field
of every warranty claim in which the center console switch group was replaced. Such warranty claims will
be reviewed and absence of this information will cause the claim to be rejected.

Lamp Warning Indicator Intermittently Shows 3 rd Brake Light Fault
In Model 220 vehicles produced before approximately October 2000, it is possible that the lamp warning
indicator in the Instrument Cluster (A1) may erroneously indicate a fault intermittently in the Center High
Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL), also called the 3 rd Brake Light (E21).
Note:
Note that the CHMSL itself operates properly, only the fault warning is in error.
If you encounter instances of this complaint, after verifying that the CHMSL is operating normally and the
wiring is properly connected, inspect and replace the CHMSL with the current version. The current and
previous versions are identified by the circuit board pattern, as shown in Figure 1. Only the latest version is
available from Spare Parts.

Brake Squeal
If you encounter instances of brake squeal on Model 163 vehicles, please perform the following procedure to
remedy (AR42.10-P-0161GI).
Note: This condition can be aggravated by cool, damp weather in combination with light braking effort.
Applying a small amount of brake pad paste to the ends of each brake pad backing plate can reduce this
effect.
1. Remove brake pads.
2. Apply brake pad paste to ends (a) of each brake pad (figure 1, 2) backing plate.

SUBJECT: Model 220, As of Model Year 2000
Banging Noises from Rear of Vehicle when Driving on Rough Roads
If you encounter instances of banging noises from the rear of Model 220 vehicles, it may be caused by the
trunk lid hitting the rubber stops (AR88.50-P-5125N, item 8).
For this reason, before trying any other repairs, check the fit of the trunk lid to the rubber stops and adjust if
necessary. Lay strips of paper over the rubber stops on the rear fenders and close the trunk lid. If the paper
strip can easily be pulled out, adjust the stops as follows.
Remove the moldings (AR88.50-P-5125N, item 2). Loosen the rubber stops (item 8), adjust and retighten.
Check adjustment with paper strips and reinstall moldings.

SUBJECT: Model 220 / 215
Distronic Control Unit (N63/1) Replacements
Over the past year, we have noticed a high number of Distronic control unit (N63/1) replacements which may
not have been required. As a result, we feel it is necessary to address some of the more common Distronic
control unit replacement errors:
1. “Distronic External Malfunction” as stated in the owner’s manual and Distronic video - This warning
message in the instrument cluster is not a system malfunction. This warning message appears in the
instrument cluster when external (environmental) Electro-magnetic waves in the area of the Distronic
vehicle, interfere with the radar sensors ability to “see” targets. As a safety measure, Distronic will
deactivate until the interference is gone (usually a few seconds). This is not a cause for parts replacement
and will not store fault codes in the vehicles fault memory.
2. Distronic warning lamp illumination while driving - The Distronic system is always active even when speed
regulation is not taking place. The warning lamp and corresponding audio signal will activate at times when
the Distronic system believes that traffic conditions require immediate driver attention and response. Such
signals to the driver are not malfunctions of the Distronic system, will not store faults in the vehicle fault
memory and are not cause for parts replacement.
3. Before the decision is made to replace any Distronic related parts, you must confirm that there are no
faults stored in any of the other vehicle systems that can influence the Distronic system. Before any
evaluation can be made of the Distronic system the following systems must be fully functional and have no
stored faults or current faults:
