1782: Devised spring detent chronometer escapement, patented approx. same time as John Arnold and Ferdinand Berthoud did.
Patentowner: Thomas Wright, because Earnshaw was not able to finance the cost for the patent.
Did much to develop the chronometer.
Awarded £3,000 by Board of Longitude.
His chronometers were described in a publication by the Commissioners of Longitude in 1806.
He appealed about the award in 1808 and a Parliamentary report was published in 1809.
