NOTE FROM PRODUCER:
I can not tell you how thrilled I am to have had the honor of producing
a CD of all Gilardino music. As noted in the liner notes' introduction
section, Angelo Gilardino is “one of the most important composers of
our time if not of all time... He is not only a genius composer but a
man of dignity, kindness, wisdom, culture, generosity, integrity,
humor, and great intensity.”
The new CD titled “Angelo Angelo” is performed by Angelo Colone, a
brilliant guitarist from Rome and contains solo works of Gilardino’s as
well as orchestral (Melos Chamber Orchestra directed by Filippo Manci).
An hour of amazing compositions performed by an amazing guitarist.
ANGELO GILARDINO:
Born at Vercelli, Italy, 1941, he is internationally known and
considered among the most representative guitarist-composers of our
époque. He has written the collection of the sixty Studi di virtuosità
e di trascendenza, acknowledged by John W. Duarte as “milestones of the
new guitar repertory”, four Sonatas, two sets of Variations (Variazioni
sulla Follia, Variazioni sulla Fortuna) and other pieces such as
Colloquio con Andrés Segovia, Sonatine des fleurs et des oiseaux,
Tríptico de las visiones, Catskill Pond, La casa del faro, Memories of
Antinous, etc.; four multi-guitaristic Concertos (Concerto d'estate,
Concierto de Córdoba, Poema d'inverno, Concerto d'autunno), and seven
Concertos with chamber orchestra: Concerto for guitar (Leçons de
Ténèbres,1996), Concerto for mandolin and guitar (Fiori di novembre,
1997), Concerto Italiano for four guitars (1998), Concerto for flute
and guitar (La casa delle ombre, 1999), Liederkonzert for two guitars
(2000) , Concerto for Guitar and Accordion (En las tierras altas,
2001), Concerto for guitar and cello (The star of the morning, 2004),
plus chamber music with guitar. As a musicologist, he has given a
powerful contribution to the guitar repertoire of the first half of the
20th century with his discoveries and publications of important works
which were either unknown or considered as lost, such as the Sonata
para guitarra by Antonio José, the Variazioni by Ottorino Respighi and
a large corpus of guitar works written for Andrés Segovia by Spanish,
French and British composers during the Twenties and the Thirties.
Since 2002, he is the general editor of The Andrés Segovia Archive, the
series published by Edizioni Musicali Bèrben and devoted to those
works. On 1997, he has been appointed as the artistic director of the
“Andrés Segovia” Foundation of Linares, Spain, the Segovia Museum.
ANGELO COLONE:
Angelo Colone graduated in classical guitar at the “Tito Schipa”
Conservatory in Lecce with distinction under the guide of Maestro Senio
Diaz. He also studied harmony, composition and jazz improvisation with
distinguished teachers. He has been involved in a concert carrier since
1989, both as a soloist and as a member of chamber music groups, from
duos to octets. Angelo has won numerous awards in Italy and outside. He
played in numerous theatres all over Italy. He has been featured on
broadcasting programmes by the Italian National Radio, Vatican radio
and RAI International. He has provided music support to literary events
with authors such as Luis Sepulveda and Sergio Zavoli. In 1997 he
recorded a CD “Sonetterra” with Sestetto Moderno and in June 1998 has
premiered the concerto for guitar “Leçons de Ténèbres” by Angelo
Gilardino in Rome. He cooperated with various orchestras for the
performances of the West Side Story (directed by Boris Brot) and Kiss
Me Kate by Cole Porter. In July 2002 his first solo CD “Sintesi” was
released by MAP of Milan.
