[year 2000]

Beat goes on for lads from Liverpool Ladies and gentlemen, the Beatles!" The Fab Four, or at least its music, is encamped in our home. I've heard them almost nonstop for the past few weeks. The only thing missing is Ed Sullivan uttering those famous words as he introduced them to adoring fans on TV:  It's Beatlemania all over again! Thirty years after John, George, Ringo and Paul broke up, they're back at the top of the charts and in the hearts and ears of teen-agers and their families. You can't help but hear the group's music everywhere you turn, thanks to the success of the newly-released compilation album called 1. The disc features 27 of the quartet's No.1 hits including, "Love Me Do," the group's first single in 1962 to "The Long and Winding Road," No.1 for two weeks in 1970. It's especially difficult when you have two teen-agers blasting the tunes from two different stereos simultaneously Even with their Walkmans attached to their heads, we still manage to catch some of "Yellow Submarine" as they walk around belting out their own rendition.   As parents, we've secretly hoped our children would enjoy some of the things we hold dear: family dinners, sunny shorelines, and rock 'n' roll. When I was a child, my father, who was only 21 When I was born, would stand in line for hours to buy the latest Beatles albums. Yes, that's good old-fashioned vinyl for those of you old enough to remember it.  Once the latest album arrived in our home, we were careful to only play it on the console stereo. Since the hi-fi was actually a nice piece of furniture with a television attached, we usually had to wait for parental supervision and that often meant interference. I recall finding numerous excuses to visit my cousin who lived next door and who had her  own turntable. The Beatles were aplenty in her house, and we were even able to dance and play albums at the same time (serious offense at my house). While my father has moved on to specialize in collecting and listening to jazz, I have continued to enjoy the Beatles. For years, I thought our twin sons would be ostracized from . the world of their friends since they enjoyed whatever we listened to, from the Southern rock of Charlie Daniels Band to Billy Joel to Simon & Garfunkel to the ever-favorite Rolling Stones. What would become of boys who shunned the Top 10 tunes of their youth, I wondered? That was until recently when the Beatles again held firm at No.1 on the charts. Now they, and many of their classmates admit the Beatles still have what it takes.

But John Lennon, killed by a crazed fan outside his New York apartment building in 1980, always argued: "In spite of all things, The Beatles could really play music together.''

After three decades, Beatlemania shows no signs of fading, with their compilation album of number one hits selling 24 million copies worldwide.

NOV 2003

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The album John Lennon (news) autographed for his assassin just five hours before the former Beatle was killed went up for sale on Friday for $525,000.

The copy of Lennon and wife Yoko Ono (news)'s "Double Fantasy," which sold for $460,000 four years ago, is being sold in part due to the recent frenzy of interest in Beatles memorabilia, according to the owner of the Web site selling the album.

"Beatles memorabilia is at an all-time peak," said Gary Zimet, owner of http://www.momentsintime.com. "For years, their material was grossly undervalued."

Last week, Lennon's handwritten lyrics to the song "Nowhere Man" were sold at Christie's for $455,000 -- more than four times the expected price.

Michael Jackson has a 50% stake in Sony/ATV which owns the rights to some 250 Beatles songs - Jackson bought The Beatles' catalogue for $4.75 million in 1985 - he made about 100 million by selling a stake to Sony. Needed a shot of Beatles Live and dishwashing therapy! Cried at the color – George’s voice had a beautiful tone and he
carries the lead melody when John dropps it in the third occurrence of “make me feel a-alright” (after solo) in A Hard
Days Night before John joins back in on “alright”. Such “dropping” by John is part of the genius – and to be truly a
human is to be a genius. He dropped the beginning of the phrase for 2 reasons (IMO): laughter at the amazing joy and
energy of the nonstop scream of the crowd and their response to every little spice, thrill, and nuisance of any sort,
and secondly due to the confidence that George is there and the train will keep going and that even his absence from those
few notes will add yet another spice.
This, like so many other appearances of George added amazing color to the performance while he remained unobtrusive –
the best of spices in a dish are often a little and quite unobtrusive. In this instance they both sang the same notes for
the extra effect after the harmony in the preceding phrase – and of course Paul stays out after having delivered the high
notes “so why on earth should I moan…” etc.
George died from cancer due to smoking.

Paul McCartney Sings to Space Station Crew

ANAHEIM, Calif. - It was "Good Day Sunshine" for the international space station crew Sunday morning.

NASA astronaut Bill McArthur and Russian cosmonaut Valery Tokarev were treated to a live wake-up call of the Beatles classic in a first-ever concert linkup to the space station.  On Earth, former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney performed the hit and another song, "English Tea," on Saturday night before a cheering crowd as part of his 11-week "US" tour.

The performance was beamed from the West Coast to the space station crew 220 miles above Earth and broadcast on NASA television, which showed live feeds from space.

10 hour session. Abby road. Recorded finished takes of 9 songs (beatles debut album). Lennon lead vocals in 4. 10 pm swallowed drops of coughdrop, gargled mouthful of milk, striped to waist and did twist and shout in one take.

It was really the Paul& john act. That’s what it felt to me. They were the ones putting on the show. Beatles concert goer.

Whenever Paul and John make some conversation between themselves on stage; have some recognition with each other on stage, we would practically faint, it was just so wonderful to see them talking to each other in front of us. Dee Ross

James Paul McCartney is the full name of McCartney.
His and John Lennon's solo careers were not as good as their Beatles years, I think because
a) there was something magic about their collaboration / chemistry
b) George Martin, a classical musician who was their producer
