>Brockwood Park School

"It is the concern of these schools to bring about a new generation of human beings who are free from self-centred action, to bring about a mind that has no conflict within itself and so end the struggle and conflict in the world about us."

Educational approach

Founded by Krishnamurti in 1969, Brockwood Park School exists to bring about an education that awakens a concern for excellence in the whole of life. Education has mostly focussed on knowledge and skills and has neglected the inner - the dominance of our lives by fear, sorrow, the pursuit of pleasure and the inner turmoil that leads to conflict and misery.

Seeing this, the School places greater emphasis on an understanding of the inward state of human beings. There is no compulsion, dogma or belief and no adherence to any psychological approach or practice. Instead there is a commitment to observing daily life as it actually happens. Krishnamurti's teachings form the backdrop for this investigation in which staff and students are equally involved. It continues in academic classes and work, in meetings, in close and intense discussions and in quiet reflection and solitude in the beautiful surroundings.

Of primary importance, though, is the atmosphere within the school. People who come here often say that it is the quality of listening and the openness in relationship that is most striking. Communication, co-operation, caring and intelligence are relied upon rather than rules, grades, incentives or punishments. When conflicts do arise, space and time are given to exploring and resolving them openly and directly. Staff and students live and work closely together and share the everyday tasks of looking after the school and caring for the grounds. All this contributes to the vitality and affection that are evident here.

Students go on to universities, jobs and careers all over the world, but many maintain their contact with the School. From what they say there is no doubt that Brockwood profoundly affects the whole of their life.

Intentions of the School

"These schools fundamentally exist to help both the student and teacher to flower in goodness. This demands excellence in behaviour, in action and in relationship. This is our intent… not to turn out mere careerists but to bring about the excellence of spirit."

The Programme

The School brings together about 60 students from over 20 countries.

Most students are aged between 14 and 20 and, as academic excellence is important, Brockwood is a registered centre for international GCSE and A-Level examinations, as well as other examinations.

However, the range of study available is far wider. Cross-disciplinary courses designed at Brockwood approach issues such as humanity's development seen from historical, psychological and social perspectives, our responsibility to others and to the environment, and currents of change in the contemporary world. With such an international group learning languages flourishes naturally. The size of the school allows for individualised programmes and study generally takes place in groups of 4 to 7.

At the beginning of the year each student, in discussion with all members of staff, determines his or her programme of study and courses are often created to meet particular needs and interests. Many courses, activities and projects are initiated by students themselves.

A balance is sought between intellectual, artistic, practical and physical pursuits and students are encouraged to develop a global outlook and a sensitivity to nature. Each student has an academic adviser and a 'tutor', to ensure that all aspects of learning and well-being are looked after and that they feel secure and at home in the School.

Visiting the School

We welcome enquiries from parents considering a school for their child and other adults interested in Krishnamurti's work in education.

Please write to the School office if you would like to visit during the term.

Working Holiday Summer 2005

Students returned to freshly sanded and varnished dining room tables and floors in the dining, sitting and computer rooms. Rooms, corridors and outdoor furniture were freshly painted, and dining room chairs repaired. Improvements to the grounds included removal of old wood and nettles from The Grove; and weeding and harvesting in the garden. This was all thanks to twenty hardworking volunteers organized by Yannick Benoit. The work began early each day, and in the afternoons there were dialogues. Yannick said that all the work is of a high quality and very helpful to us; the volunteers have saved Brockwood thousands of pounds and we are very grateful for that. To ask about volunteering for this next year, either call the school or send an email to admin AT brockwood . org . uk.   Specific skills such as painting, carpentry or repairing furniture are especially needed.

REZA GANJAVI:

Everytime a group is put together, cooperation is a key challenge. In Organizational Behaviour a dominant model of group dynamics is that of Dr. Tuckman's five stages: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. The Brockwood workparty group didn't go through these stages. It performed from day one at full force. It hit the ground running and worked very hard, such that even those who are used to physical work were knackered at night. We also had great fun. There was so much love and laughter, friendship and understanding, formal and informal dialogues, good food and music, and best of all, improvements to our beloved Brockwood, that the event was well worth attending.

Workparty 2007.

Participants got a nice email in Oct 2007 that included:

"Everyone here is very appreciative of all the beautiful work that has been achieved during the working dialogue and again I would like to thank you for all the hard work and the good spirit that you all bring with you." ...  "... would be happy to have you visit us during the term so that you can see the school in full action."
