Hollywood Reporter: For Farhad
Safinia, Mel Gibson's screenwriter and co-producer on "Apocalypto,"
it all began with a love for chase scenes. That in turn led to long, drawn-out
film discussions with Gibson that resulted in Safinia, a London-raised
mathematician-turned-filmmaker, earning his first writing and producing credit.
Dr.
Ali Nourai is chairman of the Electricity Storage Association (ESA),
promoting development and commercial application of energy storage
technologies as solutions to power and energy problems. He is also a
Strategic Technology Consultant in American Electric Power (AEP).
During his 30 years of activities in AEP, he received six US patents
and was granted the Walter Fee Award from IEEE’s Power Engineering
Society for "Professional Contributions and Technical Competence
through Significant Engineering Achievements". He championed the
deployment of the 11MW, 75MWh of NAS batteries in AEP that was the
first in the US. He also defined, specified and launched the Community
Energy Storage (CES) program as a new broadly distributed utility-scale
energy storage system that leverages the synergy with the emerging
electric vehicle market by utilizing transportation batteries. He
is currently deploying 2MWh of CES in AEP that would be the first in
US.
Dr. Nourai has focused his efforts on helping the utility
industry realize the economic and strategic values of energy storage as
a key component of the smart grid power system.

In terms of disposable income, the average Iranian today is 50 percent
poorer than in 1977. An International Monetary Fund report on brain-drain
puts it at No. 1 among 91 developing nations. Each year up to 180,000 highly
educated Iranians emigrate, mostly to North America; there are more Iranian
doctors in Canada than in Iran. Youth unemployment hovers around 30 percent.
Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 20:47:00 EST
From 1990 census.
By 1977, Iran had more students abroad
than any other country in the world at 227,497. By 1979 in the US alone,
there were 51,310 college students, ranking first amongst foreign nationalities.
[Today, of the persons of Iranian descent in in America] 46% have a bachelors degree or higher, which ranks the group not only
higher than any other recently-arrived immigrant group, but also higher than
natives in terms of educational achievement.
This high academic achievement has undoubtedly contributed to the high
occupational and financial accomplishment of Iranians as well. 43% of Iranians
are in professional and managerial positions, 35% in technical and administrative,
10% are in various services and the balance are spread over farming, craft
and laborers. Median family income is $55,501 (substantially above the national average
of $35,492).

In 2003, administrators at Stanford University's Electrical Engineering
Department were startled when a group of foreign students aced the
notoriously difficult Ph.D. entrance exam, getting some of the highest
scores ever. That the whiz kids weren't American wasn't odd; students
from Asia and elsewhere excel in U.S. programs. The surprising thing,
say Stanford administrators, is that the majority came from one country
and one school: Sharif University of Science and Technology in Iran.
Stanford has become a favorite destination of Sharif grads. Bruce A.
Wooley, a former chair of the Electrical Engineering Department, has
said that's because Sharif now has one of the best undergraduate
electrical-engineering programs in the world.
