RICHARD YATES (www.yatesguitar.com)
Richard Yates is a very talented guitarist with
extraordinary talent for making transcriptions. He is also a very
modest man and his rich website did not talk much about his background,
so I asked him to write something up and the least I could do is to
dedicate a page to him.

"I began learning the guitar in
part through a Mel Bay
beginner's book more than 40 years
ago at age twelve. I did not begin formal lessons until I
was
fifteen when I studied
with Joseph Mayes and then Peter Collona at
the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music
in Pennsylvania.
After graduating from the University
of Pennsylvania, I pursued graduate studies
at the University of Oregon,
and later completed a
Master of Science degree at
Western Oregon State College. I studied with
John Doan at Willamette University
for more than ten years. For the last
ten years I have written a series of articles
in the Guitar Foundation of
America's magazine Soundboard titled The Transcriber's Art. These articles are
devoted exclusively to the issues and
problems associated with the
transcription of music for the
guitar. You may read about my other published collections at http://www.yatesguitar.com. "

Richard also has a great sense of
humor and came up with the following picture after I posted a
description of Ida Presti's historical picture depicting a difficult
stretch.
