Yoga (UPDATES AT BOTTOM)
Yoga
is an ancient psuedo-science. The story goes that yoga was invented by
ancient kings in Asia. They used to eat a plant that would keep them
healthy but since that plant was not available any more they invented
yoga to keep them young and healthy. Over time yoga has been somewhat
commercialized and abused, like many other things. A great sage said
yoga is not for mediocre people...
There are many types of yoga:
hatha, raja, kundalini, tantra, etc. I do hatha yoga 6 or 7 times a
week - these are physical stretches - maybe a better word to describe
them is "exercizes". I also do some form of raja yoga which is
pronayamas (breathing exercizes). There are many schools of hatha yoga.
Many are too streneous - such as the popular Iyangar. I prefer the
gentler kind as taught by for example Mr. Desikachar of Madras -
although that school of yoga also goes too deep for my taste into
Petanjali and rituals and chants and worship - I like the
physical/breath/attention aspect. Petanjali, the great sage described
asanas(postures) as stillness&comfort.
Yoga includes the
theory of Chakras. Notice that I call it a theory since modern science
has not completely confirmed it. I think there's some truth to it. Yoga
reverses the effect of gravity on the cells which slows againg. Also
the reversal brings more energy to upper chakras. For example some
people who are always thinking of sex, their energy is caught in the
second chakra (water). The 3rd chakra fire is normally above the second
but with reversal, the fire goes below the water and "evaporates" it
(some fun theories with some practical proof). It also messages glands,
etc.. I owe a lot of my happiness and health to yoga. It is like a
tune-up. But if yoga is done wrong it can cause more harm than good.

Stress-Busting Yoga Lowers Blood Pressure Too
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Lowering blood pressure and relieving stress may be as
simple as taking a deep breath, results of a study suggest.
According to preliminary findings presented at the annual meeting of the American Society
of Hypertension meeting here, yoga in the form of controlled breathing lowered blood
pressure in people who were subject to mental stress.

he
emphasized the importance of homework, i.e., to sit or lie quietly
either one minute or 10 minutes and have one continuous breath instead
of disjointed inhales and exhales.
