| 2004 Die SSLA organized a relief operation fro Tsunami victims. 2003 At the Sommer Party a spontaneous collection was organised by Mrs Anne Doebeli, raffling out an air ticket to London on a private basis, to collect funds for the flood victims in Sri Lanka. The Fr. 300 that was collected at this party was topped up to Fr. 500 by the SSLA . This donation to the Flood Relief and Rehabilitation efforts was our response to the call for help from the Sri lankan Mission in Geneva. We also made a donations of Fr. 500.- to the Colombo Friend-in-Need Society to support their Jaipur Foot Programme. The Colombo Friend-in-Need Society which was inaugurated in year 1831, is the oldest charity organisation in Sri Lanka. The Jaipur Foot Programme enables every amputee in the country to get an artificial limb. If an amputee is too poor to pay, which is normally the case, a sponsor is found by the Society. The Society then helps in the rehabilitation of the amputee by giving him or her financial support. The highest number of amputees fall into the 18-25 years age group. The main causes of amputaion are war related injuries, such as anti personnel mines, bomb blasts etc. This donation was proposed by Mrs. Sharon Baetig and Mr. Urs Brenner. 2002 Donated Fr. 500.- to the the Sri Lanka Cancer Society. Millions of people are diagnosed with cancer every year. The Sri Lanka Cancer Society is making its modest contribution to the community's health by educating the public on prevention and early detection of Cancer, conducting a free clinic for diagnosis of Cancer once a month, providing care, treatment and relief to Cancer patients in its Cancer Homes and Hospice. This donation was initiated by Mr. Edmond Chanson 2000 Donated computers to a Buddhist school in Sri Lanka. This donation was initiated by Mr. Nihal Samarasinghe 1999
1978 The SSLA organized a tea sale to collect funds for cyclone victims in Sri Lanka. Tea packets were sold in public at three stalls in the city of Zürich - Sihlporte, Opposite Globus and Renweg. Half of the Fr. 5000.- collected was used to build a public well in a remote village in Amparai which was affected by the cyclone. The rest was used for charity work throught the Human Rights Organisation of Sri Lanka. This project was done in collaboration with Helvetas in Switzerland and the Human Rights Organisation of Sri lanka. Mrs. Denise Wäch and Mr. Riz Careem were the initiators of this project. *** Note from the webmaster: What is given above is only a part of the charity work that the SSLA has done since its inception in 1976. With the change of Committees each year, information on some charity projects have been lost. If any past committee member has more details, please mail them for publishing to ssla@tiscalinet.ch Thank you.
