The S2000 prototype is based on Honda's SSM (Sports Study Model) concept vehicle, first shown at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show (it was also known as the SSX).

A new-generation sports car offering a new styling, outstanding all-round performance, and environmentalism. A dynamic sports car styling reflecting Honda's spirit of challenge in the development of future cars. The sharply designed S2000 is the epitome of pure performance as well as environment protection. The power unit delivers in excess of 120 PS per liter and yet qualifies as an LEV (Low Emission Vehicle).A new 6-speed manual transmission was developed to handle the considerable power delivered by the compact naturally aspired 2-liter direct-injection 4-cylinder VTEC engine, delivering exhilarating accelerations and redefining driving pleasure.

Lurking beneath the surface of the S2000 is an innovative structure dubbed the X-bone frame, a simple feature that raises safety and rigidity levels to that of a closed body vehicle. The chassis has been designed for superior performance.
