Subject: race report: MTB-Duathlon Berne
I always like to read raced reports. Because of this I promised earlier in RST to post some this season. Finally I finished the race report of the Bernese 'Engehalbinsel' MTB-Duathlon where I competed last Sunday. Because my mother tongue is Swiss-German I translated it with google and corrected the mistakes (but it is still far from correct English, sorry). The German source and the translated report are on my website at http://home.tiscalinet.ch/weilenmann/Sport (click the ranking link 2. von 14):
I choose the short distance (2,7km run/5km Bike/2,7km run), since it
was still very early in the season. The whole race was held in
the forest in peninsula surounded by the Aare river. Unfortunately
the beautiful and warm spring weather of the previous week had become again
colder.
Since we were late I could only warm up for a short time after getting
the race number. At 10.15am the race was started. Some competitors started
very fast. I tried to run my own speed. After approx. 600m my left shoe
lace opened. I stooped and tied them. Of course I was overtaken by some
runners and I lost contact with Urs Bloesch, who I know from the Bikerace
Biel Magglingen. After the run (2,7km) I reach T1 at about 12th place.
Because I biked with running shoes the transition was very fast. On the
bike course I soon catched up to Urs and could pass him. With the time
I caught up more biker and could leave them behind me. T2 I reached as
5th (I din't know this). But I had hardly run a few hundred meters when
Ihad been passed. The guy passed me so fast that I didn't had a chance
to follow him. I ran then my speed and looked back from time to time. Urs
Bloesch ran appx 100-200m behind me. Since this distance did not become
smaller I did not have to accelerate (probably I hadn't been able to accelerate)to
defend my rank. When I reached the finish my wife told me that I was 6th.
Probably I would not have waited for the ranking anouncement. But my
wife insited to stay. During the rank notice of the juniors I
noticed the three top finisher were faster I. This meant that I was
at least 3rd in open men category (1981 and older). To my surpirse I was
finaly 2nd. I went to the podium with my seven month old son Joel (photo)
and won a voucher for a sport shop and some Power Bars. This was the first
race where I won somthing.
On the winner Jan Pyott I lost 3 minutes 31 seconds. This is a lot
of time for such a short race. But in 2001 Jan was of one of the best juniors
of Switzerland and won the majority (7 of 11) of the tri-/duathlon races
he competed. With this result I was content, even if I had expected more
on the run. But I had a good bike split and the confirmation that this
is my strongest discipline.
Later we watched the start of the long duathlon (5/15/5km). In this
race several well-known professionals competed and it was won by Stefan
Riesen (3rd of the Ironman Zurich 2001 and winner of the Triathlons 2000)
