The SS, the paramilitary police of the Third Reich, had its own reserve of Alsatian wine with the Alsatian Hohkönigsburg castle on the label. The castle, a military fortress, never produced wine but was restored by William II, Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia, and an early supporter of National Socialism.

In Germany the war imposed drastic cutbacks on printing and paper. Some traditionally polychrome, gorgeous labels were printed in monochrome only.

In some instances, German wine labels were printed at the back of unused labels from the occupied France.
