When I was five I started to play violin with my mother (piano), my brother (violin) and my sister (piano). When we came to Switzerland we didn't have any money for violin lessons and since I wasn't so good, I stoped playing. When I was nine my brother and I shared a small record player. We listened mostly to the popular songs (Beatles, italian singers, and so on), but also some of the classical pieces which we played in India. At the age of twelve I bought myself a small cassette recorder with a radio with the money I earned during the summer holidays. Already at that point music became an important factor in my life. I started to record the broadcasted classical pieces. It took me some time to get used to that kind of music. At the age of forteen I was regularly frequenting the weekly free concerts at the radio station in Lugano. I was mostly the first person entering the studio when the doors opened so I could get the best seat. The studio was a small but very warm concert hall which the Radio Televisione della Svizzera Italiana still uses for recording concerts. Never the less the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana was /is big enough to play any kind of repertoire and some famous conductors and solists came to these concerts. At that time the conductor was Marc Andreas which I once saw at our appartment taking lessons with my mother. These free concerts were very important in my musical education because I had the possibility to hear so many concerts just about five to ten meters away from the orchestra. I could hear every single instrument, so many different interpretations and all this gave me an awareness for any kind of noise or sound. Music became for me like a second sun, a source of energy and emotions.I started to save money to be able to go to all the concerts of the world major interpreters / orchestras coming in the region of Lugano. At home I was aware that my hifi was not good enough for my ears: I started to be critical towards the hifi equipments, unfortunately I could compare them very often to the live concerts. I must say I did a very good job because I could always buy my new equipments for less than half price and sell them for more than I bought them. When I was at the high school in Zurich I went often to the concerts at the Tonhalle. I bought the student ticket and then stood at a post near the orchestra. There were lots of world famous interpreters which I heard...Since I'm working I not so often go to concerts because when you work a lot, do sports, have a family where do you have time for concerts...Instead thanks also the gains earned at the stock exchange, I made myself a concert hall at home. It would take me tens of pages to write about the whole story of this concert hall. I just made a web page with the photos of it and the equipments I use.In the last five years I started to listen to jazz music. It takes very much time to know more about it so at the moment my knowledge in it isn't increasing as I would wish.Lots of people think I am mad and actualy I do admit to feel very lonely in this passion. It is very difficult to find other people who would take time to listen to classical music or would understand that somebody can spend so much money in music. |
