Garden in June 2001 (part one):
This year after a warm winter we had a cold and rainy spring followed by an unstable beginning of summer. The plants after a good initial growth, didn't develop much more until beginning of June.
Also our garden had suffered a little from this strange weather. We didn't have much nice weather to do all the improvements we had planned to.
The main priority however for this year is to work on the parts which are still in a wild state that means:
  • The left part of the garden from the pond up to the meditation point (Hollywood-Swing)
  • The right part of the garden from the stone garden up to the meditation point.
We also intended to make
  • more paths in granite on the upper part of the garden
  • a wishing well (Rita's idea)
  • plant more Rhododendrons and Azaleas
  • a place for our barbecue
As you see a lot of things to be done....
The following pictures show the process of the works from end of May till mid June.
The right part above the stone garden, quite wild...
Right part of the garden also wild
Left part of the garden at the beginning, still wild
The wild grass with 15 - 20 cm of the earth had to be removed first so that most of the roots of the weeds would also be eliminated. Since these parts of the garden are very closed to the woods, there were lots of root of trees in the earth and it was lot of hard work to remove everything. We had to work with tracks to do this job. Of course some little parts of the granite paths got ruined.
After removing the upper part of the earth Rita loosened the earth with a special machine then we covered the whole part with about 15-20 cm of humus which be bought.
To finish the preparation of the earth, Rita mixed the humus with good compost.
Meanwhile Rita had lot of time to think which plants she wanted to plant, of course taking care of the particularity of each part of the garden.
Here you see the result of the work: on the left we planted lots of low plants...
In the middle you see the part which is mostly in shade because it is part of the woods. It was very difficult to remove all the roots also because there were lots of stones. This part of the garden is actually on a rock.. Rita planted plants which prefer to be in the shade.
On the right you see the result of extracting all the weeds. The right part of the garden is not yet finished at the moment...
